Chapter 17

December 2007

It had been a month since Godphrey was taken into custody and the city was quiet. People were overwhelmed with relief and preparing for the holiday season. They were hoping for a hushed end of the year. I was back to my old self again and was enjoying getting back to going out with the boys and celebrating with drinks o the house at the local pub. There was not as much of a mystery to discuss these days but I still enjoyed going over the facts with Abby on the phone every night. Abby and I were back into a routine and had been since October. She and I were enjoying each other so much that we had begun speaking on the phone every night now and had not stopped even though the Phantom Killer was in jail.

It was getting toward the end of another year and this year Abby had graduated. She had graduated with her PhD in Psychology and was working with criminals as luck would have it. It was the year that she and Andrew would be deciding the date of their wedding. Although and I had been speaking every night she made no mention of the date or of her impending wedding. I did not ask any questions. But when she began to get busy toward the second week of December I could only assume that she and Andrew were starting to make plans to get married and soon I would be hearing of when the wedding date would be. Soon we had begun our new pattern of speaking once every three days and I was satisfied. I enjoyed every moment of her time; I only dreaded the moment that she would tell me of her wedding date to Andrew.

Throughout the holidays I ended up staying in the St. Louis area but New Years I decided I would get out and start to move my life along. I had fallen into some sort of relationship quick sand for quite some time now and thinking about trying to find someone cool to hang out with was the furthest thing from my mind.

It was New Year’s Eve and it was approximately four o’clock in the afternoon. I was sitting in front of the television; drinking a beer and waiting for the time when I would have to get into the shower and get ready to head out. That was not for several hours. That night mark and Suzie C were going to have their first New Year’s Eve bash in a few years commemorating their decision to stop having kids and to resume their partying with friends. Were all thrilled to welcome them back to the circle of bad taste and enthusiastically responded yes on the invitation.

I was watching a bad rerun of The Soup, a cable comedy show that made me crack up by myself. I loved it and was looking forward to seeing my friends that night.

Around five the phone rang. It was my cells phone not my home line.
